TP&C: Leif Olson

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

Everyone has a story in golf, but not many are as interesting and varied as Leif Olson. He came out of Duke in 2004, but quit golf for a number of years before picking it back up and making it through Q-School in 2008. He finished 3rd at Turning Stone in 2009 and made over $400,000, but failed to retain his card and then again at the following Q-School. He has not regained any status and is busy Monday qualifying for the Tour. He has struggled with a hook over the past few years and after viewing some of my YouTube videos and watching the website he decided to send me a few swings for an opinion.

As you can see Leif has great action, with fairly classic positions and a nice, aggressive, flowing motion. Without a video camera to slow it down it would be hard to even pick out what I focus on in the lesson, which is his right arm delivery from shaft parallel in the downswing through the impact area. His action there is surprisingly weak considering his exemplary movement to get to that shaft parallel position. In other words, it looks like he’s going to mash the ball like any great ball-striker, but at that moment it breaks down a bit and the right arm releases out to the right as the hands flip over. I point out here that while I can’t “feel” what he is feeling it seems as though the big muscles in his upper legs and glutes are not “firing” or “squeezing” as he heads into impact, while his arms are also not squeezed enough into the body where they can be driven past impact. I am including another video I did for Leif which he requested after our phone conversation in which I go over two impact drills I want him to add to his practice.
