TP&C: Kevin Streelman Part 2

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

After the big win Kevin has not played all that great, missing the cut at the John Deere by 2, making the cut at the British but finishing 5 over his last 7 holes to finish around 50th, finishing almost DFL at Firestone, then getting off to a good start with a 69 at the PGA before dropping to a 76 and missing the cut by 2. The idea of bring the backswing more out in front has proven difficult as Kevin has always pulled his arms inward into a deep position at left arm parallel. Our goal has been to get rid of some of the shaft shift in transition and make it easier to bring the hands out toward the ball and to tie that in with clearing the left side quicker and keeping the hips deep. Kevin likes my vision of the overall swing action but changing it is always a hard thing to accomplish. I have walked with him at both Firestone and Valhalla in the practice rounds and have seen world class ball striking, so good that it would almost be impossible to shoot over par, but that hasn’t carried to the course for a full tournament yet if you don’t count the win. Of course, winning makes up for a lot and gives us a nice grace period to get things going again, but this is all about results and we will put more time in this week to get ready for the big Fed Ex Cup run.

Kevin’s putting is another matter, and after running the tables in the win it has been spotty. Kevin has worked with Faxon a bit so I sent him some video I shot of Fax putting about 5 years ago when I worked with Fax on the course. Putting is always a cross between mechanics and natural feel, and it is not easy to combine the two properly. Brad is one of the best putters of all time and Kevin’s stroke gravitates toward what Fax does so we will be working on that as well, trying to get comfortable in the address position and giving the ball a good roll.
