I’ve known Fax for a long time and have worked with him 3 or 4 times, but only one at a time with lots of time in between. I have always thought that if he could uncross the club at the top and simplify his release action, with his wonderful fluidity, rhythm, and ability to get the ball in the hole that he would be one of the top senior golfers anywhere. Up to now he has chosen to work on different things, or at least different ways to get to a better swing, but this year he reached the bottom of the barrel with his ball striking and had a total of one top-25 in 16 events. Thus I was not surprised to get a swing in my email box a few weeks ago, and I took the opportunity to tell Brad that I was going to go over the same ideas as I did in our past discussions. In this video I include a video that I sent Fax a few years ago, and as you will see I was trying to get him to point the club more left at the top with a stop and go drill that emphasized the right arm “extensor” action where the right palm pushes out into the left thumb and establishes width and wrist cock at the top. The problem was that I hadn’t really figured out why Brad would still cross the line when hitting full shots no matter how much he practiced and drilled it in and no matter how much he tried to focus on it. I think I have figured out now why that always happened, and after I sent Brad the “basement” video he went out and finished 3rd in Quebec after being tied for the lead after 36 holes. It was by far his best performance of the year and he is now excited about getting together for some face to face work. I still think Fax has some great golf yet to play and I will do my best to help bring it out.
In another side note a good friend of mine informed me that Brandel had mentioned on TV that Brad was working with Dana Dahlquist and that was the reason for his improved play. I asked Brad if he would correct Brandel on that point, and Brad, who is friendly with Chamblee, sent him an email explaining that he had been getting help from me and that his play was due to the information I was giving him regarding his right arm and elbow action. Not only did he send the email, but he also attached the video! I’m sure Brandel enjoyed it immensely.
