This was a fun video to do as Kevin was a student of mine the last time he won on Tour in 2014. We worked together for a year and a half, during which time Kevin won about 3 million dollars, which, if you look at Kevin’s career, is about average. He is one of the most consistent players on Tour year to year, having won between a million and a million seven in 10 of the 13 years he has played, the other 3 years being $890,000, 2 million and 3 million. He is not the greatest putter or short game practitioner, so you can imagine that when he is on, he hits it as well as anyone. In the video I show some swings from back in 2014 and 2015 and compare them to now, and I think they are actually a little better, although Kevin got frustrated with his stubborn tendencies and really wanted to think less about what he is doing, which is a good reason for him to be back with his old coach Jim Suttie. As I mention here the key to Kevin’s swing is his athleticism and the beautiful flow he has that produces plenty of power for a relatively small frame. He has been one of the best drivers of the ball on Tour for years, averaging just under 300 yards while ranking high in fairways hit.
The previous 5 years before working together Kevin’s overall ranking in the ball striking stat from the beginning of each season through the TOUR Championship was average to slightly better than average; (2010-2014) 55th, 116th, 42nd, 25th, T76th, climbing to a high of 12th overall in the 2015 ball striking stat. After our time working together Kevin maintained a high ranking in the ball striking stat and I’d like to think that a lot of the things we worked on together stayed with him.
