This Week on Tour: Nick Taylor: Solid Swing and Great Routine Produce a Win at Pebble

Nick Taylor’s career is that of a classic “grinder”, a guy who was the best college player in 2010, got on Tour the hard way in 2015 going through the Canadian Tour and Web.com qualifying school, and has managed to stay out there since, winning once in 2015 and barely keeping fully exempt status in 2018 and 2019. In a final round at Pebble Beach playing with Phil Mickelson it seemed inevitable that he would crack, but when the wheels starting coming off early on the back 9 he holed a pitch at a perfect time and finished it off hitting excellent shots to win by 4. When a player is constantly hanging around the top 125 it seems that every event is crucial, and it looked to me like the toughness he has gained from putting pressure of a different sort on himself came through in spades. I note in the video how he maintained a deliberate and precise routine throughout, something that I preach to anyone who competes. His swing reflects his athletic ability as he manages almost the entire backswing with his right arm resisting bending, not an easy task unless you are strong and have great trunk mobility. The other notable aspect of his swing is the great lower body action, adding hip flexion in the backswing and keeping his hips deep through the impact area, a hallmark of almost every Tour winner.
