The P.A.T. Project: Student Lesson: CJ D’Arco Part 4

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

As you know if you have watched the previous videos of CJ’s swing, we are attempting to get through the Player Ability Test for the PGA of America, which is a must if you are going to continue on in your quest to become a PGA Member. Most of the requirements to be a PGA Professional are book learning (you have to attend 3 different weeks of “business school” and pass tests on the information presented, as well as completing extensive course work in workbook form), but one requirement that presents a major hurdle for any aspiring pro who is not a good player is the PAT, which sets a goal of shooting 15 strokes or less above the course rating in tournament conditions. The player must beat or match this score, and if he or she fails, must wait another 3 or 4 months to try again. You get unlimited amounts of tries, but you must pass in order to complete the educational process required to become a Class A PGA Professional.

CJ had not been able to sniff passing the test, but a friend of his (and one of my best students) Justin Duffie did a very nice thing and gave CJ a gift of 5 hours of lesson with me. CJ improved immediately and missed his last test by only 2 shots, and now we are shooting for the next one, in April at a course that CJ knows well. For some reason CJ took an extended break over the winter after his last failure, and upon returning for a lesson you will see that his same faults are still there. His transition move is a bad habit needing to be broken, and here you see me working with him trying to get him to feel the sequence and wrist action necessary to keep the club from coming in so wide. You will also see me jump to the impact area, as the rest of it won’t work if the brain doesn’t believe the ball can be struck with the hands well in front of it at impact.
