Travis sent his swing to me about a year ago and the changes he has made since are significant. I compared his swing at that point with Matt Kuchar, so you can imagine that his takeaway and overall backswing were inside to flat, a condition that obviously no longer exists.

This was a particularly interesting online lesson to give as Michael has an excellent swing (he’s a 2 handicap) and is knowledgeable enough about the swing in general to know that his hands approach impact quite far above his original shaft plane.

I have seen Brian once in between these two pieces, and what is apparent is something that holds true in general when teaching decent players who want to get to the next level. Depending on how long they have been playing (and fighting the limitations of their technique) we usually end up working on the same things for at least a few lessons.

This video, which actually comprises two lessons given three weeks apart, is a perfect example of the need for video analysis and the difficulty that even the most diligent students have in incorporating changes into their swings. Derrick is a smart, capable player who understands what he is trying to do and practices to that end. Alas, as is often the case, the player’s feel does not equal what is actually happening.
