Online Lesson Follow-Up: John Krystynak- Progress With Stubborn Takeaway that Causes Right Arm Problems

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

John has made nice improvements in his swing during the time we have worked together, but he has struggled with the takeaway. In this follow up video to his most recent lesson we finally see a better (not perfect) takeaway. John previously had not been able to keep his right arm from straightening when he triggers his takeaway, which caused the left arm to roll over it and the hands to move well out away from the body while the clubhead dragged low to the ground. Here John keeps the “home plate” look at address as he starts the club…

Online Lesson: John Krystynak- Still Trying to Fix Stubborn Takeaway that Causes Right Arm Problems

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

I’ve been playing a lot, playing pretty well, shooting mid-70s. I don’t think my long game is currently the limiting factor. It’s wedges and pitches. However, I do want to get my full swing as good as possible. I think I’ve improved my takeaway, and mostly stopped tensing up my right arm. I’m trying for more depth, so I don’t have to over-retract my right shoulder. One thing that mystifies me is why I cannot get the club to shallow much from the top. I hope that if I could get more of a kick, I’d get a bit more…

Online Lesson: John Mannion- Encouraging Face Rotation in the Backswing to Help Right Arm Movement

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

My two most common misses for full swing are 1) pull / hook and 2) push slice, in that order.   Push slices occur much less often when using the shorter backswing that you see here. It’s short compared to my previous overswing, but probably still long enough. So, shortening the swing has been a way to reduce the number of times I get blocked.   But the pull hook still occurs with this “short” backswing. It’s not uncommon to hit a good drive up the middle and pull hook an approach shot into trouble.   Regarding ball flight, distance…

Online Lesson: John Krystynak- Still Working on Takeaway Technique and Right Arm Movement

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Working on takeaway of course and trying not to pull back with right shoulder. As that improves, I get a decent number of swings where the club isn’t heavily crossed over. Coming down, I have a hard time getting club to shallow and these swings are pretty realistic as to what happens on course. Slightly steep, clubhead and shaft over hands and right arm. Flight ends up very slight cut. All very playable, but still baffling to me as to why I can’t really get the club shallow. John has improved his takeaway, but it still has enough issues as…

JB Holmes: Utilizing Great Sidearm Action

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Here we have a nice, stable down the line view of JB Holmes hitting what appears (by the ball speed) to be a 7 iron, although the announcers don’t say definitively what club it is. Holmes starts with a standard athletic set up, then starts the swing by whipping the club under his hands in a move most any teacher would try to improve in a less accomplished player. From P2 to P4 he keeps his left arm well in front of him while adding left wrist flexion, then the cool part begins. Holmes waits to lower until the change…

Lesson of the Week: Shaun Powers, PGA- Working on Right Arm Action

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Shaun is competitive club professional from Connecticut who would like to improve his swing and his ball striking. He is just about to turn 50, which gives him opportunities in tournament play that he hasn’t had in the past. He is already competitive against the younger guys so if he can improve a bit, he could be in contention for the National Senior Club Pro and possibly earn a spot in some senior majors. Shaun is a classic case of right arm and shoulder overuse, and in his case, it causes his upper arm to get trapped behind him in…

Lesson of the Week: Jamie Kilmer, PGA Part 4 – More Right- Arm and Shoulder Work

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

This video should help anyone who struggles with an inability to get the hands more forward at impact with an iron. The culprit is right arm and shoulder pull back (right shoulder retraction), which in transition causes all sorts of issues. Jamie’s overuse of his right shoulder to increase his turn causes his upper body to lean toward the target before the lower has a chance to initiate the forward motion, leaving the arm stuck up and behind him while his head struggles to stay behind the ball. The feeling needs to be that the right arm and shoulder do…

Online Lesson: Terry Childs- Right Arm Issues Lead to Slow Rotation

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

In this lesson I am going to try to answer Terry’s specific questions that you see in his email: “I feel like my backswing is on a pretty good plane, but I have two specific questions having to do with 1) my hip turn and whether they turn too much at the start of the swing and i.e. is the right knee okay and I know I have a little lift around the top, so I would like your thoughts on those two things specifically. Second, the little vertical drop at the start of the transition is not a conscious…

Online Lesson: Erik Johnson- Trigger Affecting Right Arm Movement Throughout the Swing

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

One of the things I find regularly with good players who don’t quite hit the ball as well as they would like is an overactive trigger. Erik is a good example of this and I spend a good bit of this lesson discussing in detail what he is doing to get his swing underway and how that affects everything else. One of the reasons why these online lessons aren’t shorter in length is the degree to which things that happen early in the swing complicate what comes directly after, and as the swing unfolds each complication makes it less likely that a consistently strong impact position can be achieved.

Right Arm Position at P-3: A Survey (Part 1 and 2)

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

As I get older and gain more experience teaching and trying to play I have come to focus more on the right arm and how it functions during the swing. From watching hundreds of Tour caliber swings in slow motion and teaching players with a full range of abilities from hack to tour winner I have developed a preference for what I would call a “flared” upper right arm at left arm parallel (P-3) in the backswing as opposed to a “pinched” position, but in this survey you will see that excellent players utilize every conceivable right arm motion, from Miller Barber, whose upper right arm was parallel to the ground at P-3 (or completely horizontal), to Fred Couples, whose upper arm was still facing straight back at the camera at the same position (or completely vertical).
