Student Lesson: Joey Lane

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

You have seen Joey before, and what you find here is more or less a repeat of the last lesson I posted. Joey is a very good junior (he won the Optimist International Junior Championship this year at the Champions course in Palm Beach, Fla. against an international field) but his excellent play has come about fairly recently and his swing is prone to regressing to old habits when he plays in multiple tournaments without getting a check-up. Here he is back to pinching his right arm in the backswing, which sets a pattern for him that ends up with…

Online Students: Stephen O’Neill

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Stephen has an excellent looking swing that could really use the compression movement in backswing to add power and to bring the hands to impact closer to the body, which would help make the squaring of the clubface less problematical than with his high approach. If you look at Stephen’s upper trunk turn in the backswing it becomes apparent that there is room for more coiling of the upper body as the swing heads to the top. In order to get this increased trunk rotation and not lose the brace in the right leg Stephen needs to push the right…

Student Lesson: Steve Bohreer

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

It is both surprising and gratifying when a student exhibits improvement in a short period of time. I never expect to see full swings incorporate the kind of major changes that are many times called for and suggested by my instruction. I like to see evidence of change when we use the video multiple times, but when there are combinations of things to fix up it is extremely difficult to put them together and make swings that show a large improvement in the overall motion and technique. That is what makes this video so special, in that Steve showed up…

Online Students: Tom Richards Part 4

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Tom is doing some nice work toward his main goal of un-steepening the shaft in his downswing. In this video he tries out the takeaway-stop drill and I have a chance to compare it side by side with his full motion swing. The differences would be subtle to the eye (probably couldn’t pick any out) but are obvious once the lines are drawn. You can see what a major difference a couple of inches of depth in the hips makes to the overall motion and approach angles of the swing, as Tom’s drill swing gets much closer to what…

Online Students: Jason Huguet

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Here I give you the opportunity to stop the video and do your own analysis. I don’t think it would be such a great idea to have all of you post your analyses on the site as that might make Jason’s head explode, so for this one you can discuss elements of how mine was different but don’t post the whole thing.

Student Lesson: Mark Long

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Mark has a ton of experience with great players as he has been a Tour caddy for over 20 years. He has seen them all and been right next to most of them, but as you can see his swing does not reflect what he knows he would like to do. The big problem areas have been the same for years: his backswing gets vertical and lifted, while his downswing gets majorly steep and exits way out to the right. I had a feeling that the stuff I was working on and teaching in my day to day lessons and…

Online Students: John Neeson

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

This is John’s second online lesson (the first 3 months ago) and you will see that progress has definitely been made on the backswing. What needs to happen now is a more difficult task, changing the sequencing of the swing in order to get the right arm to start down earlier from a better position and move into a better approach to impact.
