Online Students: Dean Dunn-Rankin

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Dean has taken a couple of online lessons and has (according to Dean) improved quite a bit. Here we see that we are getting down to the major issue in his swing, which is that his swing pattern is arms away in the backswing, hands dropping back and down in transition while the legs work underneath him and out toward the ball. This would be a big change to accomplish without hands on work, but it is certainly worth a try. My suggestions include a deeper backswing so that an “out” move with the hands wouldn’t feel so “over the…

Online Students: David Ferrell

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Here we see one of the most common ways to get the clubhead “stuck” behind the hands in the approach to impact. David starts with the “triangle” look at address, which always looks tight to me, and I encourage him to go the “home plate” address (a la Hogan) where both arms are bent at the elbow and only loosely tied to the body. David’s swing doesn’t show any effects of this tightness until left arm parallel in the backswing, where he begins to slide to the right and lift up. His lack of contact with the ground makes it…

Online Students: Branden Nagler Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

One of the things I have to do after watching a swing and looking at exactly what it is doing (although now it seems that the opinion is growing that without a Trackman no one can really see fully what is going on) is to try to come up with reasons for the movements that are present and for the apparent stubbornness of the movements to change. Some of this requires conjecture as I guess that perhaps this does that because of this, or that this won’t do that because of something else, but when it comes to finding ways…

Online Students: Stephen O’Neill

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Stephen has an excellent looking swing that could really use the compression movement in backswing to add power and to bring the hands to impact closer to the body, which would help make the squaring of the clubface less problematical than with his high approach. If you look at Stephen’s upper trunk turn in the backswing it becomes apparent that there is room for more coiling of the upper body as the swing heads to the top. In order to get this increased trunk rotation and not lose the brace in the right leg Stephen needs to push the right…

Online Students: Tom Richards Part 4

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Tom is doing some nice work toward his main goal of un-steepening the shaft in his downswing. In this video he tries out the takeaway-stop drill and I have a chance to compare it side by side with his full motion swing. The differences would be subtle to the eye (probably couldn’t pick any out) but are obvious once the lines are drawn. You can see what a major difference a couple of inches of depth in the hips makes to the overall motion and approach angles of the swing, as Tom’s drill swing gets much closer to what…

Online Students: Ryan Groves Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Ryan has been a faithful member of the website for quite some time, and he has done some very nice work on his swing, especially when it is viewed from down the line. He compresses nicely on the backswing, bring the club up smartly on the shaft plane, and gains depth with the hips while moving symmetrically with the legs and knees. His shoulder, arm, and wrist angles are all quite good as he approaches the top of the swing, but unfortunately the top doesn’t’ come soon enough and the swing goes back overly long, causing some sequence problems and…

Student Lesson: Justin Duffie Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Justin has been working with me for around 2 years now and is the most improved player I teach on a regular basis. He was a 13 when he came to me and with his swing as it was he was short-gaming it to shoot around that. He is now a 5 and hits the ball so much better it is pretty astounding. His swing technique has improved consistently (not that I haven’t had to talk him down from the ledge a couple of times) and here you will see us working on another major aspect of his swing in…
