Swing Analysis: Wayne D. on What Starts the Downswing

I’ve been teaching for over 30 years now and I have never wavered from my belief that the forward swing is initiated from the ground under the right foot. There are many opinions that it starts elsewhere, most notably with a rotation or “bump” of the left knee, but here I show Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan doing nothing of the sort. Sequence is of huge importance in building a solid golf swing and it would make sense to have a clear, accurate picture of how the best players do it.

Wayne, I don’t see anything that suggests otherwise. Good technical observation supported by two of the best players on video. Agree with you.

Would you agree the trend for keeping the left heal down in the backswing ruins most peoples chances of making this move? You’d have to be extremely flexible in the mid-section to pull it off.

I think a fear of lifting my left heal or using my legs too much in the 90’s (Leadbetter) lead to a lean (I call it a tip-shift) and generally lousy golf.

Thank you for the background and thank you for sharing. Good luck with all you’re going through. I’ll have to learn more about NHS. If you have a website, please share. Happy Holidays to you and your family.

    Chuck,

Wayne and I have never met. I was just looking at Hogan video’s on YouTube about 5 years ago and there he was. I was immediately hooked. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched his Hogan-Woods comparison.

His videos gave me some hope at a really low point in my life. I was at Uni in Manchester (miles from home) and ready to quit. The asshole mentioned previously had started turning my grandparents against me, in the absence of my mum… It’s not just his insights on golf but his honesty and his bravery to stand up to the big wigs that inspired me to dust off.

If it hadn’t been for Wayne and an alley cat who jumped in through my bathroom window (Annie), I don’t know I’d be in the position I am now. It’s possible I’d be in no position at all.

This is the only form of social media I use because I’d probably get myself arrested if Wayne wasn’t there to reign me in. Not that his last effort had much effect (sorry Wayne).

No website bud. It’s the National Health Service (NHS). All free hospital services in Great Britain are run by them. Barrack Obama said they were a benchmark he wanted to set for care in the US (paraphrased). I just give basic NHS health messages to people on low incomes, etc.

Cool guys. Ben Hogan was quoted in his later years, the question, Ben how would you like to be remembered “first as a gentleman, then as a golfer”. Ben would be proud of you.

Can’t wait to start the 2016 Masters. Happy holidays and new year. David
