Pro Tip of the Week: Hogan’s Right Arm and Elbow Movement

In Ben Hogan’s book he describes the golf swing in it’s general character as a combination of half side arm and half underhand in which the right elbow and upper right arm move in front of the right side and in front of the hip in the downswing. This week’s Pro Tip video shows Ben Hogan demonstrating the correct motion of the right arm.

I love these videos. One of the reasons I have had a slow learning curve is not being keenly aware of the real time speed of the motions. In my opinion the flattening of the shaft occurs in a nana second—-(critical move) plus a sidearm fling——I found difficult to repeat consistently in segments——- when(self taught ) I realized I must incorporate these actions in unison as ONE MOTION— I developed a better success rate————–I have found static photos to be somewhat hazardous as they are placed in position rather THEN SWUNG THERE———– thanks for listening tom hurst

Awesome stuff Wayne… I’m working on the opposite – I tuck my right elbow too much in from reading this tip a million years ago! I’m trying to let it ride along with the body turn in the transition now…

I swear, the secret is not in the dirt, its in videoing yourself a million times with your iPad until you look like the greats!

That and having Faldos Book, and Ledbetters and your videos, and Sneads, and Nelsons, and Prices (he had the same problem as me, too fast legs too inside out), and Els book and …

Fun stuff if you are analytical and have nothing better to do than hit balls all day for years! Golf is THAT difficult

Awesome tip – the golf swing is a side arm throwing motion – forgot that one, it really helps me to captures exactly the subtle timing of the two part downswing (1) lower body rotates gently like you are skipping a rock and then (2) BAM, the right arm accelerates through at the ball.

I still can’t for the life of me get the club to come out way under my left shoulder like Hogan! Best I can do is slightly under left shoulder, mostly its straight through my left shoulder. Club is on right forearm coming down, never on top of right forearm… Maybe I need to rotate lower body more and aim my hands more around. Maybe think swing out to in!
