Playing for Money: Matt Shubley-Needing Earlier Left Forearm Supination in the Downswing

As usual Matt’s swing looks quite good (he is a very good player), especially since he hasn’t been able to get out and practice due to the virus, but his tendency to get the club behind his hands at P6 is still one of his main issues. Over time we have added lateral movement to transition and the forward swing and have almost eliminated his crossing the line at the top. With the club on plane and the shaft flattening in transition, Matt has to now focus on rolling the left arm down the chest by supinating the forearm earlier so that he won’t drop his right shoulder and back his head up more behind the ball as he strikes it. Matt’s hands are usually right up to the ball at P6, but here they are somewhat back in a wider approach, even though he drags the club into the ball nicely, one of his major strong suits. I’d like him to feel like his left shoulder was working more down and left while his right shoulder stays higher, which along with the left arm supination should work the shaft up to the high side of his right forearm on the approach instead of under it. Matt’s history tells us that when he gets the club stuck behind him, he has trouble with overdraws and blocks, and he has always hit it better when the club is on his hands from DTL at P6.
