Jason has been struggling with his takeaway, and when you can’t get your swing started comfortably you are in big trouble. He has developed a stutter at the start of the backswing, which I think is caused by the tightening of his right arm and elbow joint to trigger his swing. He knows better than to do this, and we have identified the problem, but it has persisted in spite of the information. He asked me why it was happening and I simply had no answer for him. More important than to figure out why it happens (other than the physical part) is how to overcome the problem. It sounds simple to say “here’s what you’re doing, now don’t do that” but it is not simple to stop doing it. I got a bit creative here and decided to have Jason experiment with lifting the club off the ground with his wrists, and then start the backswing from there. Happily, that produced a smooth takeaway and almost a flawless swing. This is one of the best swings you will see technically, and if Jason can overcome these quirks that sap his confidence he has the ability to make a living doing this.
