Austin has taken an extended break after turning pro last year, first due to poor play and then the Coronavirus, but now is back at it and trying to improve. Austin is incredibly strong (I watched him hit 4 drives that flew 330 when I played 9 holes with him), but that amount of power can get you into trouble when you don’t have control of it. I have always wanted Austin to make his swing more compact, taking advantage of his strength knowing that even if he gears it down he will be plenty long and always have the ability to launch it if he wants to. In this video I pinpoint a couple of specific items I would like him to work on, namely the contracting of his right shoulder upward in his takeaway, and then the amount he backs away from the ball as he hits it. I put him side by side with Tommy Fleetwood, who happens to be built similarly to Austin. Fleetwood demonstrates a relaxed trunk coil in the backswing with no discernable trigger move like Austin’s and keeps his head out on the forehead line as well as anyone. Austin has tremendous potential, and to tap into it it’s all about simplicity and control.
