Online Lesson: Josh Bialowins PGA- Working on Pitching Technique

By Wayne | PGA Professionals , Videos , Videos: Online Students

Josh is an assistant professional at Champions Retreat in Augusta, Georgia, and sent these videos of him doing some around the green pitching with the report that he was developing the dreaded fear of chunking and skulling what would seem to be simple shots.  I’ve seen this problem with players of all levels, and the fix is almost always the same since the problem in technique is almost always the same as well.  I’m a big believer in the leading -edge type pitch being the go-to, or “stock” shot around the greens, unless the shot specifically calls for “using the…

Lesson of the Week: Marc Shapiro: Fixing Overly Inside Takeaway has Huge Benefits

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Lesson of the Week

Marc has recently seen deteriorating ball striking, which led him to Osprey to have me take a look.  Watching Marc’s swing I saw that he was doing a nice job at some of the most difficult things to teach, sequence and transition.  However, his takeaway was too close to the ground and behind him with the additional problem of standing up, and as a result his entire right side was overturning with too much hip turn and his right arm getting well behind him at the top.  By using a shaft to keep the clubhead outside of his hands in…

Online Lesson: Mike Ballo PGA- Tightening Up an Excellent Player’s Swing

By Wayne | PGA Professionals , Videos , Videos: Online Students

Mike, assistant pro at Westchester CC in New York, won the New York State Open in 2019, which tells you how good he is because that must be one of the most difficult state opens to win in the entire U.S.  He is good friends with John Lamendola, and since Mike struggled a bit with his ball striking in 2020, John recommended that he send me some swings to have a look.  I try to treat every player I see with the same intent, that is to simplify the body and club movement to create better conditions for solid and…

Online Lesson: Owen Otto- Sergio-like Action Needs Trail Arm Training

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

Owen is a 9th grader (just turned 15) and is relatively new to golf, having concentrated more on basketball until Covid shut down the indoor sports.  He started with a swing that went well outside and looped back inside and has worked recently on gaining depth in the backswing to eliminate some of the need to shallow the club.  One of the main problems here is that Owen is right-handed, but always set up from the left side when given a golf club.  He is obviously an excellent athlete and has gone from a mid-80’s shooter last year to low…

Frank Bensel PGA: Follow-Up- Talented Players Make Quick Changes if they are Not Too Complicated

By Wayne | PGA Professionals , Videos , Videos: Online Students

These follow-up swings were taken 6 days after I sent him his first analysis.  The video speaks for itself: like the title says, good players can make changes quicker and easier than not-so-good players.  However, the only real test as to whether the changes were good ones is in competition.  We will see how Frank plays in the future.

Online Lesson: Frank Bensel PGA- Top Notch Club Professional Asks for a Look/See

By Wayne | PGA Professionals , Videos , Videos: Online Students

Frank is 52 and a 3-time National PGA Assistant’s Champion from the Metropolitan Section, arguably the toughest section in the country when it comes to quality of players.  Frank is always in the mix at the club pro level, but he was having some ball striking issues and gave me a ring, although we had never worked together in the past.  Without a doubt, Frank has an excellent golf swing, and my job is to point out items that in my opinion might be causing some of his inconsistency.  The first thing I notice here is Frank’s posture, which I…

Online Lesson: Brent Greenwood- Great Technique, Needs Dynamics

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Online Students

I don’t know if I have ever given an online lesson like this: Brent’s technique is nearly flawless.  It is on plane at every crucial position, hips are in the box both face on and dtl, no excessive lifting or arm collapse, literally nothing to criticize about how he has built his swing mechanics.  So, what is the lesson about?  I always look for athleticism in a swing, especially one as sound as Brent’s.  When I watch it, I get this sense that he could do much more with his pivot in terms of stretching, loading, and creating a more…

Lesson of the Week: John Lamendola- Working on Not Backing Up and Slowing Backswing Tempo

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Lesson of the Week , Videos: Online Students , Videos: Swing Analysis

John has made great strides with his swing over the years we have been working together (mostly online) but now that he has acquired a place in Florida, we have had a couple of in person lessons in which I have been able to get John to feel things that not hard to mention and explain online but are not easy to feel without some hands on, face to face work.  Here we find John’s head backing well away from its original position as he arrives at impact, and to get him to feel what it’s like to stay out…

Patrick Reed Swing Analysis: Swing Changes Simplify Release Action

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis , Videos: This Week On Tour

The story from the TV announcers during the Torrey Pines event was that Patrick Reed had begun working with David Leadbetter and that Reed was getting accustomed to the swing changes.  He was a bit vague about what they were working on, but he did mention trying to get his hands to release more in tandem with his body.  Reed in the past has played with a cupped left wrist and an extremely open face well into the downswing, but his genius in squaring the face without much if any lateral hip movement is obvious.  In the new swing it…

Si Woo Kim: Swing Analysis-Classic Form

By Wayne | Videos , Videos: Swing Analysis , Videos: This Week On Tour

SW Kim’s swing is fun for me to look at as it demonstrates many of the items I teach regularly to any level of student.  It starts with the set-up, nice and clean and angular without being tense.  I often see players overdoing their attempt to have “good posture” by pulling the shoulder blades back and tensing up the lower back muscles, a sure recipe for a fatigued back and possible injury.  The most important part of the set up is bending from the hips so that the pelvis is tilted and supported by the abdominal and oblique muscles.  Kim’s…
