TP&C: Tony Romo

By Wayne | Tour Players and Celebrities

Some time ago I did a video that focused on a Peter Kostis analysis done during a Tour event comparing the swings of Tom Brady, New England Patriots quarterback, and Tony Romo, the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. Romo had the far superior swing, but the video concentrated more on Kostis’ use of what I considered bad camera angles to comment on certain parts of their swings. So, when the rest of my foursome quit after 9 in the practice round for the Isleworth Pro-Invitational I went out onto the back 9 as a single, which lasted a hole until…

Online Students: Rob Kane Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

I think it is so cool to be able to try to help someone from the other side of the world. Just thinking about the advances in technology over the last decade can make your head spin. Rob is from England, and here we see a classic right arm action issue, one that if you have watched a bunch of these lesson videos you find crops up quite often. Rob has a bunch of good stuff happening in his swing, and does a great job of returning the shaft pretty darn close to the original shaft plane on his approach…

Swing Analysis: Calvin Peete

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

We all know that Calvin Peete was one of the most accurate drivers of the golf ball who ever played the game. We probably have some memory of Peete’s swing, a bit odd looking due to a poorly set broken arm as a youth, but the main memory is of a ball rolling down the fairway. Peete was the Tour’s leader in percentage of fairways hit for 10 consecutive years, and won 11 Tour events in 5 years from 1983-88 before Tourette ’Syndrome drove him off the Tour and eventually out of competitive golf.   Peete’s swing is built around…

Things I Have Learned

By Wayne | Articles: General Golf

I started playing tournament golf when I was 12 years old. That would be in 1969, some 44 years ago. I got my first teaching job in 1984 (it was a summer camp for juniors), and my first job at a country club in 1986. That’s 27 years ago. There have been a lot of tournaments and a lot of lessons in that time, and as you can imagine I have picked up a few tidbits of wisdom along the way. Now, you might consider some of these ideas wise, and some of them foolish, but they are representative of…

Swing Analysis: Jeff Sluman

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

It was a long par 3 (at least back in 1983 you could call it long at 205 yards) at Rio Pinar CC in Orlando, as I stood on the tee with my old college roommate John Salamone and John’s buddy from Rochester, Jeff Sluman. Slu was just a little guy (I’m no giant at 5’8”, 145 lbs.-but I was bigger than Jeff), but when he took a 3 iron and hit it straight up in the air at the pin with about a one yard fade to about 10 feet I just stared at the green and commented that…

Swing Analysis: John Daly

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

It is length that defines John Daly, be it the length he hits the golf ball or the length of his swing, which is about as long a swing that has ever won a major championship. Daly exhibits massive talent every time he hits the ball, not so much for his prodigious drives but for the wedge shots he hits with the club fully 2 feet past parallel. There are players who have long swings with the driver, notable pre-war Hogan, Snead, and Mickelson, but all these players dialed down the irons measurably for control. Not Daly: he just keeps…
