After watching David’s swings I was interested in finding out more about his golf history before I did the analysis. The following came from David in an email:
“I appreciate the quick response. I started playing golf at age 15 and am currently a 21 year old college student. (I do not play organized collegiate golf, just independently)
I never had any decent coaching when I played varsity golf in High School; my coach was very anti-mechanical and told me not to change anything in my swing. But I still practiced several hours a day. I would hit hundreds of balls on the range (probably the wrong way) under the assumption I would get better. I often would play 18-27 holes a day as well. I somehow managed to break 80 on a good day in High School, with a super flawed swing. (I’ll attach a video of the swing I used from ages 15-20 just for fun. Sorry about the bad camera angle) my handicap was around a 5 back then.
The last few months I have actively started filming and making changes. I have watched many of your YouTube videos and have been studying the swings of good players. I did get a helpful lesson from a teaching pro when I was visiting in Arizona a month ago. I played an easy course out there (6,500 yards) and shot 74.
I live in Wisconsin and we have a lot of snow on the ground here. All of the courses are closed from November-March. Currently, I practice basically everyday (2-4 hours a day). I go to a heated driving range which is open year round, and often work on my swing at night in an indoor facility. The owner at the heated driving range has worked out a deal for me, so I can hit as many balls as I want. I also am a member at a golf club when the snow melts.
I hope to compete in some tournaments this year and do well. I’m willing to put in the effort; I just want to make sure I am practicing properly this year.
Also, I would say my most common miss is a hook. Blocks to the right can be an issue as well. Pitching/chipping off a tight lie is a weakness for me. Driving the ball off the tee is my strong suit. I sometimes hit a little draw, but aim to hit the ball straight.”
Thanks Wayne
I sent David the analysis, and this was his response the next day:
“Thank you for the analysis, Wayne. I worked on my posture and some other elements on the range today. The results are already starting to show. I love your YouTube videos… the recent one with Holly Sonders was pretty funny. Keep making videos and I look forward to following up with you.”
While online lessons are not as effective as face to face lessons, I think by now you are getting the idea that decent instruction can be helpful even without the benefit of hands on pushing and pulling. I look forward to seeing how David’s swing looks the next time he sends it in.
