Online Students: Chuck Zellner Part 8

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Hi Wayne, it’s been a few months since I sent in my swing for review. In my last online lesson, you were pleased with just about everything except that my head was dropping back as I hit the ball and my tempo was a tiny bit too slow. As I worked hard to try and fix those things, other parts of my swing fell apart. I had an important life change as my wife gave birth to our beautiful daughter. As you know, there’s nothing better. I couldn’t ‘t seem to get to the range and so I did slow motion swings inside. Well, that screwed me up because as I tried to have a shallow downswing my brain did a shortcut and I had way too laid off backswing! So, I put up a net in my basement where I could at least hit punch shots and work with a laser to stay on plane. Well, my top of backswing was on plane but it was also HALF A BACKSWING! When I taped myself on the course it looked terrible. I was rigid with hardly any wrist cock and half a backswing. I was also still coming over the top. It was just ugly and I questioned what the heck I’m even doing. So, it looks like the only way I improve is to suck it up and find a range early in the morning when there are less people staring at the guy with a tripod. Why am I the only person who tapes his swing? So, I went to the range today.

This is Brown Deer where Tiger Woods turned professional and said HELLO WORLD. I’m trying very hard to make a big full turn with a full wrist cock. I want this thing to be DYNAMIC. I play with guys 25 years older than me and one guy who is a little younger but very small and we all hit it the same distance. I played with some better players earlier in the year and they were blowing it way past me. That must stop. So, here I am. I started up where we left off after the last lesson in the spring. I changed my grip to a long thumb to make my swing longer and help get rid of any pause at the top. I think it’s working. I don’t know if you remember this but when I came to see you on Halloween a couple years ago, you changed my grip to a long thumb but I think I just stopped using that because I didn’t understand it’s importance. Shame on me. Ok, I’ve got the metronome going and making a big full turn with full wrist cock. I try to stand tall with weight on the balls of my feet and then as I take it back I load and deepen my hips. Then I try to stay deep with the hips as I hit it and swing around to the left and let get my right-side swinging through. With the iron, I do these things and try to hit the lowest sustained hook that starts at first base and hooks back to the target. This thought is the only thing that gets my hands up to the ball, supinating and seemingly doing the right thing. As you can see, the ball never goes to the right and hooks back, it actually goes straight. It’s just a thought that works. As I look at my driver face on it looks like I need to load up more into my hips on the driver? I see I’m cutting them back. Golf is hard and even though I think these swings look pretty good I don’t know if I will take this to the course? So, I’ll just have to make more time to practice more. What else can a person do? Thank you for your help, Wayne. Chuck Zellner

Chuck, as always, provides a good summary of what he has been doing and how he is processing the information and suggestions I have given him. Chuck has the tendency to overdo things, which is better than not changing at all, and many times we must ratchet back on the things we talk about. In this video, I give Chuck 4 or 5 bits of advice to continue to hone in on the swing that he wants and will work on the course.
