Online Students: Allie Economou

Allie is a junior in high school who has played some golf, but quit for a while and is now getting back into it. Her brother, Tommy, plays for Rice University and her father, Michael, is a student of the game and a fan of the website and is working with both of them. He sent me Allie’s videos to analyze after my work with Tommy’s swing had some success.

I really like Allie’s swing for its aggressiveness. It is becoming somewhat prevalent in women’s golf to see slow backswings and less than catchy transitions, but Allie does not fall into that category. This will help her create speed and distance, but first she has to keep her right arm more in front of her body in the backswing, and then she must learn to keep her hip depth in the forward swing. You will see in the video that her upper trunk is almost vertical at impact, with her hips pushing upward and to the right, a common problem among just about all players looking to improve their ball striking. Allie’s main focus must be on keeping hip depth through impact while keeping her head out over the ball. I’m sure that the TPI people would attribute all of this to some sort of weakness in this or that muscle, but I see it as a technique problem wherein she is moving in directions that are easier to accomplish (it is easier to “early extend” than it is to stay more bent over), and that if she were shown the proper movement and made to feel it she could probably do it way better than she is now. Once the technique is understood and felt then the gym work would have some relevance and the exercises could be tailored to a certain degree, although I still believe that a general, overall fitness regimen is always the best way to go rather than spending too much time on motor pattern (golf specific) exercises.
