Online Student: John Mannion Part 2

If you watched John’s first online lesson you can readily see that he has made great improvements in his swing simply by normalizing his setup, which was pretty radically tilted back and to the right initially. Here he looks nice and square and centered, and it makes a huge difference in the overall path of his swing. Now we can move on to other important items, namely his tendency to overswing and to spin his hips rather than driving them laterally. The concepts I go over here are the “early catch”, wherein I encourage John to experiment with trying to start his legs moving forward way earlier in the backswing, along with “extensor action”, where he would achieve structure in his arms by pushing the right palm into the left thumb while cocking the club. This pushing out feeling with the right arm will effectively straighten the left arm and increase the likelihood that the earlier start of the forward swing with the lower body will have an immediate pulling effect on the arms and lead to much better sequencing. The last thing I recommend is to focus on driving the hips more laterally “out of the box” from the face on view, as it is apparent in these swings that he is doing much more spinning, or rotating, than driving his weight from right to left, which leads to his needing to move his upper body forward to shift his weight. The increased lateral push, which is, of course, diagonal in nature (45 degrees) will help catch the upper body and along with the early movement of the lower body and the extensor action of the hands and arms will help to make his overall swing much more efficient.
