Lesson of the Week: Peter Slaven Correcting Overly In to Out Path

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Peter is a high-level amateur who would like to sharpen his ball striking skills to get to an even higher level where he would be competitive on a state and national level. He has plenty of power, carrying his driver 280-290 yards, but tends to hook the ball overall and to miss too many irons right and left, the culprit being his in to out club path. I see his right arm continuing to deepen in transition which keeps his upper arm behind him in the forward swing. Peter loads to the right but never recovers his upper body position, and by being too far behind the ball and approaching from the inside he gets flippy through impact. In order to sustain bent right wrist and flat left wrist further past impact I would like to see Peter move his center of mass less to the right in the backswing (head stays closer to where it starts) while loading pressure into the right leg, get the hands more “under” the club at P3 with the shaft pointing more vertically, helping to keep the backswing more in front of him. Then, in transition, I want him to feel like his trunk rotation pulls his left arm more around and less down so that his hands can head more toward the ball and less behind him, and at the same time try to consciously move his upper body to the left so that his head returns closer to its starting position by the time he gets to P6. You will see in the video how the exaggerated rehearsal with the hands moving in what appears to be an “over the top” fashion while the club leans back on the right index finger produces a very nice-looking approach to impact from both camera angles.
