Here we have a perfect example of the need for technique to go along with athletic ability when it comes to hitting a golf ball. John excelled at many sports as a kid and still remains in top condition while working as a television producer. He has come to golf late and has played some but has found it to be more difficult than he ever imagined, so much so that he has not been able to enjoy playing due to extremely inconsistent and generally poor ball striking. One look at the first swings I show in this video and you will immediately see why. While John has fluidity, rhythm, and speed, he has (had) no concept of what was required to hit a ball with a quality strike, that elusive “fundamental” of the forward leaning shaft at impact. John is what I would call a non-instinctual golfer, or one who has no knack for applying the clubface to the ball. Yes, there are “naturals” out there who can hit anything with no knowledge of what they are doing, but most normal people need to have the essential elements of the swing explained to them, and, as you can see here, they need as well to be able to “feel” the physical movements that are desired. Many of the most basic items are counter-intuitive in nature, which makes a quality instructor a must. My teaching is always a work in progress, and I will be better the older I get, but at this point I feel as though I have advanced enough to be able to help a player such as John who aspires to a far higher level of play than he is currently capable of.
