Joey, now a freshman at Virginia Tech, has made tremendous progress as a player during the time we have worked together. He was a late starter as a junior, and then had a big win at the Optimist World Junior in 2012. He was close to taking a gap year after high school due to being late in the recruiting mix, but a spot came open on the Tech team and the coach thought enough of Joey’s potential to give him the spot. There was talk of redshirting Joey after an injury sidelined him for a few weeks, but he came on strong in qualifying and surprised everyone by earning a spot as a starter in Tech’s last 3 fall events. This is no small feat as Tech has been ranked as high as 10th in the nation this fall.
In the video you will see us working on pretty much the same things we always work on. I find that good players, once they identify the most stubborn things in their technique that they would like to change, feel ok about continuing to work on those items. It is my job to present fresh perspectives on how to feel the movements and how to practice in order to train out of a bad habit into one that works better and can be trusted. Thus, we focus here on the hands moving more inward in the backswing and the left wrist remaining neutral to cupped in transition. We also are constantly trying to increase his lateral movement in the forward swing.
