This video consists of two lessons I gave my student, Everett, who drove down from Pennsylvania after watching a number of my swing analysis videos on waynedefrancesco.com. Everett is an avid, almost obsessive golfer who has had huge struggles with his ball striking over the years in spite of seemingly doing all the right things, that is practice and take lessons. When you look at Everett’s first swing you will see what I see when presented with a new student. It may be a good exercise for you to stop the video before I start in with my analysis to see what you might come up with as advice. Then, as I draw my lines and offer my opinion on what is happening and what needs to be done, you can compare what your eye picked up and compare with mine.
Everett’s swing is a classic “legs under” move that I see over and over in my days of teaching. His posture gets him off to a bad start, as weight on the heels at address promotes an overall move forward into the toes. Everett’s idea of proper swing path is decidedly in-to-out, and this, combined with his built-in move from heels to toes, gives him the knees under, release out to right swing that you see. In the later pictures you see him with his posture corrected, then the leg movement addressed with the help of a small shaft in the ground. What will be more difficult is the release direction, as he has trained (unknowingly) his hands to compensate for his body movement. He needs to move around to the left, and we will have to work on this much more in the future.
