Ethan has come along at warp speed this summer, but we still have great difficulty getting his hips to open and his right side to fire into impact. I have tried to do a lot of hands on work getting him to feel where he needs to be and what he needs to aim for as far as pivot motion and position in the downswing, but it seemed like his hips were too weak and just did not want to be stressed by staying deep while opening and getting his pressure shifted over toward the outside of his left foot. In this last lesson, he seemed much more able to work into these positions when we did it slowly, but as you will see when he hits a full shot for real his entire body wants to stay facing the ball at impact. It occurred to me that it might not be a strength problem, and that perhaps he just didn’t know what to do specifically with his upper right side, which cannot hang back and be passive if the body is going to open and drive through impact. I gave Ethan the split hand punch shot drill, and the first 3 or 4 times he tried he hit about 6 inches behind the ball. After going over why this was happening Ethan tried again and started catching the ball much better. With another batch of attempts, I could tell that a lightbulb had gone off in Ethan’s brain, and you will see what I mean when you watch the video. It is likely that full swings will not look this good for a while, but it is nice to know that he is physical capable of making a proper pivot movement through the ball.
