I first saw Dylan 3 years ago down in Florida when I was working with Gary Hallberg, and he has now completed his college career at Presbyterian and is looking forward to playing high level amateur golf. I’ve worked with him a few times over the 3 years since and he and his dad Kevin decided to take a trip to Boca Raton to spend some time with me this past week. Dylan played decently in college but was plagued by putting woes and didn’t really get everything he could have out of his ball striking. This lesson was more of an annual check-up, and we found some stuff to work on. He had been getting a bit steep with his irons and was spraying his driver a bit, so it wasn’t surprising when I saw the vertical nature of his set-up and swing path. I suggested he get a little further away from the ball at address and try to feel more athletically out over the balls of his feet while in addition relaxing his arms at the elbows. After that I saw his swing moving more around his body into a deeper position at the top while trying to maintain width. Our focus in the forward swing was on loading more right initially in the takeaway and then really trying to drive off the lower right leg to gain more lateral movement with the lower body. You can see in his first batch of swings that the combination of steepness and the lack of lateral movement was causing his left arm to bend in the approach to impact and the club to sneak out over the hands, leading to an out to in path and some massive divots. He accomplished this beautifully in the down the line swing, and from face on (only punch shots as I forgot to tape a full one) you see a much more active lower body and a straight left arm, although he will have to watch out for too much forward head movement when he tries to drive his lower.
