Lesson of the Week: Drew Wine

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Drew is a perfect example of a very good player who has never been happy with his swing mechanics and the way he strikes the ball. Drew is what you might call a “hands” player, who due to excellent rhythm and tempo and a repeatable action can keep around a 3 handicap, although he always feels that under pressure or on a particularly difficult course he is at a disadvantage because of his inability to control his ball flight. As you will see Drew utilizes a “throw” release pattern where his left hand breaks down shortly past impact as his right wrist straightens and his right forearm pronates to square the clubface. His pivot action is partially the cause of the release problem as he is not bent over and open enough heading to impact for him to keep his left arm moving and his right arm bent. The best way to attack the problem is to work at it from both ends of the swing, doing impact drills (punch shots, pre-set punch shots and split hand punch shots) to help train the hands to square the face if the pivot ever allows them to get forward and around enough, and also working the setup and backswing so that he can make his swing wider and shorter while retaining enough posture to be able to get himself more open as he approaches impact while still transferring pressure toward the left heel. This may seem like a daunting task but it is always good to remember that you don’t have to do anything perfectly, but if you start doing things better you can incrementally improve your ball striking.
