In this lesson we continue to strive for better sequence, focusing on ways to move the hips forward as they rotate. Bryce has a violent transition, pulling down hard with his hands and arms to make up for a lack of lateral movement that would pull the left arm against the chest in transition. In effect he is skipping the muscles in his lower back, which would engage and lead the upper half of the upper body, making for a smoother transition and a more effective transfer of energy into the hands and wrists. There are many ways to think about this: when you see it on the video it is obvious what is happening. Changing it may also be obvious (move more laterally) and since Bryce is an excellent player and a smart guy you would think he could just effect the change immediately. Alas, as is almost always the case, it takes a while to figure out how to get a major pattern change to happen when it’s in the middle of the swing. The first important thing is to get the movement to happen in practice, so we try it slow, with small shots, and with props set on either the left or right hip to move towards or get away from. It’s not easy, but Bryce is up for it and continues to work hard.
