In this 10 minute video you will see something that always gives me a thrill, and that is a student making a substantially different and better swing at the ball, and producing a hugely improved impact, all in an hour lesson. Brian showed up with a swing that was way too long, mostly due to overly active legs, and a flipped release caused by a pivot that was still almost sideways to the ball at impact. After working through the ideas of what we wanted to happen, that is a more compact and braced backswing and a more rotated forward swing (leading to the opportunity to deliver the right side to the ball so that the hands could be more forward at impact), we went out to hit some “punch” shots (defined as a swing that is no more than left arm parallel in the backswing and shaft parallel in the finish, producing a low flying shot designed to roll up to a green or out of trouble), where Brian had his first experience with truly compressing an iron shot. His trouble will be governing the length of the swing, and hopefully he will be back to work on it again.
