Lesson of the Week: Bobby Impaglia, PGA

Bobby is the Director of Instruction for the city of Boca Raton, and he is the reason I have a place to teach down here in sunny Florida. We met while competing on the Space Coast Mini-Tour in the early 1980’s, and we have been good friends ever since. Bobby played on the PGA Tour for a short period before turning to teaching, and he was instrumental in helping me get my first teaching job on Long Island in 1985. Bobby has had me work with him on his swing off and on throughout our relationship, and now that I am down here for an extended period he wanted to take advantage and try to remedy some chronic habits that have plagued him forever. In the video, you will see why Bob has had such a difficult time controlling his driver, as he demonstrates the common pattern of crossing the line at the top of the swing and then coming out from under himself with early hip extension in the forward swing. As I continue to gain experience in my teaching I have come to focus more and more on how the opening of the clubface affects the right arm in the backswing, and how a lack of forearm rotation will cause the upper right arm and shoulder to pull back behind the body as the swing approaches the top and cause not only the club to cross the line but the upper body to lean forward before the hips begin the downswing, an out of sequence movement that causes a multitude of problems in the downswing and eventually great difficulty controlling the clubface through impact. Our focus here is on how to open the face without sucking the club behind the body in the takeaway, and then gaining width approaching the top of the swing by feeling like the hands and arms push out away from the head while the wrists cock and the face continues to open.
