Online Lesson: Mark Armstrong- Wondering Why his Hips Come Out of the Box After Impact

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Message to Wayne Hi Wayne,    one question I had when looking at the videos is wondering why my weight (hip) shifts to the right after impact. I can never stay in the phone booth sort of speak because my right leg and hip fall outside after impact. Hope that makes sense. not sure it will. The issue Mark has with his right leg leaving the “box” after impact may appear to be of questionable importance (it’s after impact so what does it matter?) but because things happen so fast in a swing (a total of one second give or…

Online Lesson Follow-Up: John Krystynak- Progress With Stubborn Takeaway that Causes Right Arm Problems

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

John has made nice improvements in his swing during the time we have worked together, but he has struggled with the takeaway. In this follow up video to his most recent lesson we finally see a better (not perfect) takeaway. John previously had not been able to keep his right arm from straightening when he triggers his takeaway, which caused the left arm to roll over it and the hands to move well out away from the body while the clubhead dragged low to the ground. Here John keeps the “home plate” look at address as he starts the club…

Follow-Up: Improving Ground Force Reaction: Online Lesson Justin Baker

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Justin’s follow-up swings show that amazingly enough he has been able to execute most of the suggestions I made a couple of weeks ago. Justin’s side by side shows him adding width to the takeaway with his right arm gaining space and height as he stretches his upper trunk in the takeaway while he gets to P3 with his wrist cock more at 90 degrees, quite a bit less than before. At the top his right arm is less bent and further from his body, which eventually will give him an opportunity to flatten the shaft in transition, which doesn’t…

Online Lesson: Nicholas Gobel

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Comment to Wayne: Sometimes I hit the ball with a low-ball flight. It feels if my hands have come to far inside after the follow though. Would please explain the best swing path and how close to being on plane is my swing. Thanks The thing that jumped out at me after watching Nicholas’ swings was his grip and his release. The grip seemed overly loose (especially the right hand), and Nicholas could make a nice overall improvement simply by keeping the connection between the right thumb and forefinger and by focusing on the point at which the right palm…

Online Lesson Follow-Up: Thomas Petric

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

As you will see in his follow-up swings, Thomas has made some nice progress with the things I suggested in our online lesson by centering his setup, moving the ball a bit more forward, and controlling his backswing from P3 to P4, which in turn helps to improve his sequence by eliminating some of the right arm and shoulder pull back that lean the upper body forward before the pelvis can get the forward motion started. Next for Thomas is going to have to be learning to sustain the angle between the left forearm and the shaft and release the…

Improving Ground Force Reaction: Online Lesson Justin Baker

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

As you will see young Justin has a nice swing but is concerned about his down the line release and an inability to fire his glutes into impact and get his left leg to straighten at the proper time. From a fairly upright posture Justin sets the wrists early and keeps the right arm close to the body, allowing it to bend quite a bit at the top of the swing. In the forward swing Justin’s lower body action is weak, both in terms of rotation and lateral movement. He is justified in his feeling that he is not using…

Online Lesson: John Krystynak- Still Trying to Fix Stubborn Takeaway that Causes Right Arm Problems

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

I’ve been playing a lot, playing pretty well, shooting mid-70s. I don’t think my long game is currently the limiting factor. It’s wedges and pitches. However, I do want to get my full swing as good as possible. I think I’ve improved my takeaway, and mostly stopped tensing up my right arm. I’m trying for more depth, so I don’t have to over-retract my right shoulder. One thing that mystifies me is why I cannot get the club to shallow much from the top. I hope that if I could get more of a kick, I’d get a bit more…

Online Lesson: Thomas Petric- Improving Sequence by Controlling the Right Arm and Shoulder at the End of the Backswing

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Thomas has a nice move that could be improved rapidly by keeping the right arm and shoulder from overturning at the top of the swing. As you will see in the video Thomas does a nice job until the club reaches about ¾ of the way back, at which point he continues to crank the right shoulder and arm back until the club crosses the line and both arms are lifted. The pullback of the right shoulder creates a sequence problem when it pushes the upper body forward into the forward swing before the pelvis has a chance to lead…

Online Lesson: Jamie Kilmer, PGA – Part 6

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

need help. I see my drifting…a little sloppy on take away and head moving. That’s where I will start today. trying to get lower to slide towards target with my back to target longer. thoughts? hitting it high and short at times. Jamie and I have been working together for a little over a year now and like many PGA professionals he gets busy in season and has limited time to practice and keep an eye on his swing. Jamie’s issues usually involve his right upper arm getting stuck at the top while his pelvis rotates quickly in transition, which…

Online Lesson: John Mannion- Encouraging Face Rotation in the Backswing to Help Right Arm Movement

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

My two most common misses for full swing are 1) pull / hook and 2) push slice, in that order.   Push slices occur much less often when using the shorter backswing that you see here. It’s short compared to my previous overswing, but probably still long enough. So, shortening the swing has been a way to reduce the number of times I get blocked.   But the pull hook still occurs with this “short” backswing. It’s not uncommon to hit a good drive up the middle and pull hook an approach shot into trouble.   Regarding ball flight, distance…
