Online Student: Kerry Ondrovik

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Here is an excellent swing that lacks what I would call “dynamics”, meaning that watching the wrist and hand action I could see that it just wasn’t’ going to produce the kind of speed that the rest of the mechanics would seem to almost guarantee. The hands and wrists are hugely important elements to the production of speed (among other things) and my advice to Kerry here is to free up his hands by cupping the left wrist a bit at the top (a la Webb Simpson) and then creating more of an angle between his left arm and the…

Drills: The Takeaway-Stop: then Finish and Hit Drill

By Wayne | Videos: Faults, Fixes and Drills

I created this drill to help me attack a major issue in my own swing, which is also an issue a number of the web site members have. This concerns the move required to load and compress in the back-swing while keeping the hips nice and deep creating room for the right arm in front of the body in the forward swing. I found this drill actually helped me create a greater amount of “catch” and I started hitting it further than I ever have before. If rising up or not compressing in the back-swing is an issue in your…

Student Lesson: Jared Kenworthy

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Jared has been a member of the web site for a while now and has created a nice series of videos that he posted in the forum documenting all the hard work he’s done on his swing, check them out if you haven’t seen them yet. Jared used the information on this site, a few online lessons, a lot of motivation, some self-analysis and plain old hard work to build himself a very nice swing. In this video Jared actually made the trip out from Kansas for business and decided to drop by Woodmont for an in-person lesson, which was…

Student Lesson: Justin Duffie Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Justin has been working with me for around 2 years now and is the most improved player I teach on a regular basis. He was a 13 when he came to me and with his swing as it was he was short-gaming it to shoot around that. He is now a 5 and hits the ball so much better it is pretty astounding. His swing technique has improved consistently (not that I haven’t had to talk him down from the ledge a couple of times) and here you will see us working on another major aspect of his swing in…

Student Lesson: Jessica Fernandez

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

One of my very best friends likes to “gift” me a subscription to “Golf Tips Magazine” every year as a joke, since we both have a great time going over some of the instructional articles found inside. I recently read one that “exposed” certain “Myths” in the game, one of which was the supposed myth that impact was the “moment of truth” in the swing. The point was not that impact was not important, but that it was really everything that led up to that point that created whatever that impact was. Now, I can see that as an argument,…

Student Lesson: The Meyers Sisters

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

When I saw these three young ladies on the range at my club I immediately went over to their father and told him that I would love to teach them. He was a bit overwhelmed with trying to help them himself so he thought that was a good idea, and the swings you see on this video are the product of about 2 hours of instruction apiece. I think you will be as amazed as I was to see these swings, especially when you consider that they have never played more than a couple of holes on the golf course.…

Swing Analysis: Brendan De Jonge: Over the Top, Or an Effective Pattern Used by Some of the All-Time Greats?

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

As South African Brendan De Jonge took the lead heading into the final round of the AT&T Classic at Congressional, the TV announcers couldn’t help but endlessly repeat the statement that De Jonge’s swing was “over the top”. Of course, they never took the time to explain what they meant by that phrase, why it had a negative connotation, and why it was usually associated with chops from the local muni and not guys who were leading Tour events.   I can’t tell you how many players I have taught, and this includes good players along with not so good,…

Swing Analysis: Seung-Yul Noh

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Wow. Now, this kid has a great move. Sean Foley just inherited him as a student, and he can just plan on collecting checks, because there really isn’t much to do with this action except to keep it away from unscrupulous women. (Just kidding). Really, though, as far as a swing that does the things that I prefer and teach as a general rule, this is about as close as it gets. Noh is only 21, and I have a hard time not seeing him do great things in the future.

Tiger at Congressional: Hah – I Told You So

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

This is for all the knuckleheads who questioned the greatest player of our generation on his golfing judgment, most notably his choice of coaches and the swing technique that they have been working on for about a year and a half, not coincidentally about the exact amount of time Tiger said it would take for the changes to feel comfortable. I can see where people rightly questioned his ability to overcome his knee and Achilles injuries, because when physical problems become too pronounced any kind of high level golf swing is nearly impossible. Luckily he has been able to get…
