Paul Pastore, PGA: Shallowing Impact and Controlling Wedges

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Paul is an assistant professional working in Connecticut who combines a great natural swing technique with lots of power. Paul’s main issue, as is the case with most young players with his attributes, is controlling the ball. Paul stays quite centered during his swing and has a late release, so that a ball position that is back of center is almost guaranteed to produce a huge divot with a full swing. I like to have players with Paul’s ability to lag the club play the ball more forward, even with the wedges, as that will do a lot to decrease…

Rory and DJ Demonstrate Power off the Tee

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson put on an awesome driving exhibition at the recent WGC tournament in Mexico. Here we see them on the same tee box filmed with the same camera, so we can watch and compare how they manage to hit it out there 370 to over 400 yards (it was at 8000 feet elevation, but Kuchar was in the group regularly 50 yards behind). McIlroy has more early movement into his right side and has a huge stretch of his upper body, while DJ gets the same type of stretch with an earlier set of the wrists.…

Lesson of the Week: Steve Barber, PGA – Working on Trigger, Width, and Impact

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Steve is 55 years old and the Head Professional at the Locust Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York. He is an accomplished player having qualified to play in 5 National Club Professional championships, but he has never made the cut and blames that for the most part on ball striking. He has been hitting his irons off the toe and not compressing the ball the way he would like and is looking for some things to work on as he gets ready to head back north to start the season. The first thing I notice is the hitch in…

Tiger Woods Demonstrates Exemplary Pitching Technique

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

As we know, the reports of Tiger Woods having irreversible pitching yips have been greatly exaggerated (Brandel and Hank). He has always had one of the best short games in history, and he is still getting it up and down from everywhere. Here we see a standard tight lie pitch shot where he chooses to flight the ball higher and carry it further than it seems he would have to as he considers the best spot on the green to land the ball. The old adage to get the ball on the ground as soon as possible can be good…

Rory McIlroy: Demonstrating One of the Secrets to Great Ball Striking

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

In comparing Rory’s swing over the past 9 years we see some differences in the backswing, namely the takeaway and the position of the club at the top, but in all the swings we see Rory add posture into impact and follow through and get through the shot with an amount of side bend unattainable by most normal golfers. Rory has always stayed tall in the backswing and usually pulls his right arm a bit behind him as he gets to the top, then dropping the hands slightly back and down before recovering and getting the right arm back in…

Tiger Woods Demonstrating Wonderful Putting Technique

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

In this video we see Tiger hitting a couple of mid length (20-30 feet) putts, and there is a lot for everyone to learn from his set up routine, his stance, and his stroke. One key word is “relaxed”: his lack of stress is evident from the moment he starts walking toward the ball to address it, then in his posture and balance at address, and then especially in the motion of his stroke. He employs a somewhat narrow stance with his eyes over or just inside the ball and appears to be evenly balanced on his feet. He makes…

Lesson of the Week: Peter Slaven- Trying to Change an Overly In to Out Path

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Peter is an excellent player (scratch handicap) I see 3 or 4 times a year when either I visit Chicago, or he comes down to Florida to stay with his Dad and get out of the Chicago winter. Pete tends to hit the ball high with a draw, and his problem shot is one that over hooks to the left. We have worked on improving his sequence and using ground forces more effectively, and in these swings his transition move is leaving his head too far back to the right and slowing down his lower body clearing. The first thought…

Justin Thomas: Great Short Bunker Shot Technique

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

It’s not often we get a perfect view of a bunker shot on a TV telecast, but here we see Justin Thomas short sided in the sand from a spot on down the line view. Things to focus on are the almost dead square stance, flexed knees, low hands made lower by gripping well down on the club, the quick set of the wrist with the face opening constantly, the movement of the arms well in front of the body without taking the club outside much, the slight shallowing of the shaft in transition (where you might expect it to…

JB Holmes: Utilizing Great Sidearm Action

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Here we have a nice, stable down the line view of JB Holmes hitting what appears (by the ball speed) to be a 7 iron, although the announcers don’t say definitively what club it is. Holmes starts with a standard athletic set up, then starts the swing by whipping the club under his hands in a move most any teacher would try to improve in a less accomplished player. From P2 to P4 he keeps his left arm well in front of him while adding left wrist flexion, then the cool part begins. Holmes waits to lower until the change…

Lesson of the Week: Shaun Powers, PGA- Working on Right Arm Action

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Shaun is competitive club professional from Connecticut who would like to improve his swing and his ball striking. He is just about to turn 50, which gives him opportunities in tournament play that he hasn’t had in the past. He is already competitive against the younger guys so if he can improve a bit, he could be in contention for the National Senior Club Pro and possibly earn a spot in some senior majors. Shaun is a classic case of right arm and shoulder overuse, and in his case, it causes his upper arm to get trapped behind him in…
