Online Lesson Follow-Up: Eric Ashcroft

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Message to Wayne: Hi Wayne, these are a couple follow up swings from my lesson a couple of weeks ago. I’ve been working to roll the right foot, push off the right leg towards 10:30/11:00 (from a DTL perspective), and keep the head and right scapula from drifting too far towards the target on the backswing. I’d appreciate any further feedback you might have on these things or anything else.    Any idea why I’m seeing my AoA so negative? I’m regularly seeing my mid and short irons creep up around -7 and I’m taking fairly sizeable divots. I’d be…

Wyndham Clark Swing Analysis: All Around Excellence

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

This is a great golf swing, and I’m going to go out on a limb (not a big one) to say that this guy will win on Tour and eventually be one of the best players out there. When I first saw this swing I knew I would like it, and when I slowed it down (the swing here luckily was caught with a stable camera on a good angle) I liked it even more, and will now use it as a model to show all my students, but especially the young ones trying to make a living playing the…

Lesson of the Week: Dick Rotner Making Great Progress at Age 72

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

I’ve been watching a few videos online that claim to offer the “best” swing technique for senior golfers (even though the instructors offering the advice are anything but senior) but I think you’ll see here that golfers who are getting up in years (I’m 62, so I qualify for that category) like Dick can still make improvements by focusing on sound fundamentals that prioritize the forward swing instead of concentrating on lengthening the backswing. Dick, like most seniors, has limitations in the amount he can separate his upper trunk from his lower. Do we really want to create more backswing…

Playing for Money: Brett Walker- Working on the Takeaway, Backswing Plane, and Right Arm Control

By Wayne | Videos: Playing For Money

Brett had some nice finishes in the PGA Winter Series tournaments last year after seeing me a few times but didn’t play much this summer due to his job, so he wanted to get a look/see as soon as he got back to Florida and entered some events. Brett has the quintessential tour player body (tall, lean and strong) and my goal for him is to simplify his swing by working on 3 things: keeping the club above the plane in the takeaway by using the right forearm takeaway option (he was already mostly there in this regard), keeping the…

Danny Lee and Johnny Miller: Front Foot Flying

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Watching Danny Lee at the CJ Cup (he finished 2nd) I noticed his leg action and immediately thought that it was similar to a swing I have looked at many times, Johnny Miller. The movement I reference here is the front foot, in these cases the left foot, sliding well to the left away from its original position as the hips continue to rotate aggressively just after impact. In Miller’s case his huge lateral pelvic drive along with his rotation move his left foot forward and left, while Lee, more of a squatty, right leg hold with less lateral movement…

Lesson of the Week: John Martindale- Set-up Routine, Quiet Trigger, and Swing Shape

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

John is a high single digit handicapper who has enough good things going on in his swing that he could certainly get himself down to the low single digits. His problem (whose isn’t) is the erratic nature of his ball striking, and right away I saw a strong, fluid athletic motion hampered by a lack of structure and discipline before he even takes the club away. John’s method of setting up to the shot does not lend itself to consistency as he neglects to have a routine that will establish ball position, distance from the ball, alignment, foot position and…

Online Lesson: Eric Ashcroft- Wanting to Reduce Trail Arm Throw

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Message to Wayne Hi Wayne I’d like your overall thoughts on my swing and which parts I should focus my efforts on improving. One area that I think might be causing me issues is my release. From a down the line view it looks like there is a lot of trail arm “throw.” I can miss the ball on both sides (and, depending on the day, can thin it as well), and perhaps this has something to do with the approach and release at the ball. I could obviously be way off, but I’d appreciate your thoughts on that. This…

Online Lesson: Mark Armstrong- Wondering Why his Hips Come Out of the Box After Impact

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Message to Wayne Hi Wayne,    one question I had when looking at the videos is wondering why my weight (hip) shifts to the right after impact. I can never stay in the phone booth sort of speak because my right leg and hip fall outside after impact. Hope that makes sense. not sure it will. The issue Mark has with his right leg leaving the “box” after impact may appear to be of questionable importance (it’s after impact so what does it matter?) but because things happen so fast in a swing (a total of one second give or…

Lesson of the Week: John Martin – Figuring Out how to Tackle a Complicated Swing

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

John is a decent player who could be much better. He has advanced about as far as he can with the swing he showed up with, and as you will see there are many issues to deal with, too many to tackle all at once. John is serious about his game as evidenced by the fact that he comes up to Baltimore from D.C. (worst traffic in the universe) to seek help, and while I never want to overload a student, I do like to go over the swing as a whole and try to explain how the overall pattern…

Patrick Cantlay Swing Analysis 2019

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

It is amazing that at 27 years of age and after having missed 3 full years of action on the PGA Tour with a fracture in his lower back Patrick Cantlay has risen to #6 in the World Golf Rankings. In this video I look at his swing now versus 2011 just before he turned pro, and I encourage everyone to watch a video on YouTube by TPI founder Greg Rose (to see that video just scroll down past my swing analysis video and you’ll find it below) explaining how Cantlay changed his swing to lessen the stress on his…
