Lesson of the Week: Matthew Latham- Getting the Backswing on Plane to Simplify Impact

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Matthew is an English amateur is his late 20’s who has seen me for help about twice a year for the past 5 years. He has a great build for the game (lean and strong), and has toyed with the idea of turning pro. Going through his old swings it was apparent that Matthew’s backswing changes over time, and that he has not settled on a pattern he can trust. In this lesson we find him crossing the line at the top, not necessarily a swing killer, but in Matthew’s case, since he doesn’t flatten the shaft quickly in transition,…

Lesson of the Week: Steve Rogers- Using the Wayne D Elite Senior Swing Ideas

By Wayne | The Senior Swing , Videos: Lesson of the Week

Steve is an excellent player (you can see that by his swing) and has qualified for multiple U.S. Senior Amateurs. He has been a student of mine for over 5 years, although I only see him a couple times a year as he lives in Kentucky and his Florida residence is on the other side of the state. He has suffered from many of the types of injuries that we all do as we get older (he is 62, same as me) and has lost some mobility. His main issue has always been a lack of rotation in his lower…

THE BEST Senior IRON Swing for Elite Level Play and Competition

By Wayne | The Senior Swing , Videos: Swing Analysis

This video is a continuation of “THE BEST Senior Swing for Elite Level Play and Competition”. In the first video I covered the driver swing: now, in this video, I cover the iron swing. The two swings are similar but there are some key differences when hitting the ball off the ground with an iron, hybrid, or fairway metal instead of off a tee with a driver. While other online golf instructors suggest that seniors prioritize a bigger backswing, my senior swing prioritizes elite-level impact with power coming from proper sequencing made possible and enhanced by the specific stance and…

This Week on Tour: Last Week: Kevin Streelman

By Wayne | Videos: This Week On Tour

This was a fun video to do as Kevin was a student of mine the last time he won on Tour in 2014. We worked together for a year and a half, during which time Kevin won about 3 million dollars, which, if you look at Kevin’s career, is about average. He is one of the most consistent players on Tour year to year, having won between a million and a million seven in 10 of the 13 years he has played, the other 3 years being $890,000, 2 million and 3 million. He is not the greatest putter or…

This Week on Tour: Nick Taylor: Solid Swing and Great Routine Produce a Win at Pebble

By Wayne | Videos: This Week On Tour

Nick Taylor’s career is that of a classic “grinder”, a guy who was the best college player in 2010, got on Tour the hard way in 2015 going through the Canadian Tour and Web.com qualifying school, and has managed to stay out there since, winning once in 2015 and barely keeping fully exempt status in 2018 and 2019. In a final round at Pebble Beach playing with Phil Mickelson it seemed inevitable that he would crack, but when the wheels starting coming off early on the back 9 he holed a pitch at a perfect time and finished it off…

Lesson of the Week: Amelie Alcantara- Right Arm Issues Lead to Weak Impact

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Amelie is a 16-year-old sophomore playing for her high school golf team and hoping to improve enough to earn a golf scholarship to college. I first noticed her practicing diligently on the range at Osprey Point where I teach, and noted to a friend that she evidenced an issue that I see constantly with juniors who are thinly built, that of over-turning the right arm and shoulder in the backswing. In Amelie’s case (as you will see) both her hands were on the target side of her head at the top, and the amount of turn was bending her spine…

Lesson of the Week: Michael Gilels- Posture, Posture, Posture

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

It’s amazing how many good things an improvement in posture can open up for any level player. Michael is a pretty good stick, about a 5 handicap, but like most golfers is plagued by inconsistent ball striking, especially with his irons. With his upper back in extreme flexion (you can feel this by dropping your chin down until your neck begins to bend down as well) and his weight centered toward his heels, Michael was limited in what he could do with his upper trunk and with his right arm. As we worked to stand up taller with his chin…

The Two Main Elite Level Pitching Techniques Demonstrated

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I have a question for you: Do you track your ball-striking stats either manually or with an app? If your answer to this question is “no” and you’re serious about lowering your scores you should consider changing that approach. Now think about these two questions: How many greens in regulation do you hit on average? When you miss the green how often do you get up and down for par? Even if you’re one of the best ball-strikers on the planet hitting approximately 75% of your greens in regulation you’ll still have to get up and down every fourth hole.…

Cameron Smith and Brendan Steele: Swing Comparison -Sony Open Playoff

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Watching these two swings on TV in full speed I could see the club doing some serious dancing at the top so I figured it would be interesting to slow them down and check them out more closely. What we will see are two distinctly different backswing techniques that produce excellent approaches to impact, both getting the upper right arm nicely in front of the right hip for a sidearm style release, Steele’s being slightly more extended toward the target. Both players have the shaft well flat of the plane at P3, with Smith utilizing a severely externally rotated right…

Online Lesson: John Lamendola Coming Off Shoulder Surgery, Still Looking for Speed

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

John, the 2018 club champion at Winged Foot, is the most prolific online lesson taker in the history of WayneD.com. I would still rather work face to face but when that’s not possible John has proven that with consistent help via the computer (and it helps quite a bit that John has a great room to film in and all the gizmos to measure his progress) you can incrementally work things into your swing that help you improve. John has had to take about 3 months off due to his shoulder surgery and coming back it’s not unlikely that he…
