Online Lesson: Darin Pape- Perception of Clubhead Path after Impact

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Hi Wayne, I’m looking forward to working with you. I played high school and golf in college at a DIII school. I took 7-8 years off after college and have been back at it for 2-3 years. I’m really struggling with consistency, especially with mid to long irons and my driver. My misses aren’t just small either…. I hit shots that are off the planet. Like 1-2 fairways over sometimes. My driver miss is a mix of either a very fast snap hook or a huge block. My iron miss is a shot that starts WAY left and then goes…

Phil Pfeiffer: Follow-up to Online Lesson

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

“Here are the follow-up vids from the recent lesson. In these videos I’m trying to do what you specified as I understood it. My thought is to get the backswing “deeper” by having the left arm work more across my chest and by flaring out the right arm earlier the way you said. I can definitely feel a difference. It feels much more like I am in position to deliver a strike from the inside and with a lower approach. The shot pattern has definitely shifted in the direction of a more consistent draw so that’s good, although the driver…

Online Lesson Phil Pfeiffer: Working on Right Arm Movement in the Backswing

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Looking back at Phil’s second lesson I wrote “Keep the nice takeaway but flare the right arm so it’s not pinched anymore” and in this lesson we see that his right arm is still causing problems. There are so many moving parts in the golf swing that it’s easy to forget about one detail because the player is focused on another one, or two, or even three. On top of that you also need to prevail over the neural pathways you’ve developed over time. Challenging but not impossible and Phil has proven he’s up for the challenge. In the backswing…

Swing Analysis: Mackenzie Hughes

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

After missing 5 straight cuts and 9 out of his first 11 events for the 2020 season (finishing outside the top 50 in the 2 cuts he made), Hughes finished solo 2nd at the Honda Classic on the incredibly difficult Champions Course at PGA National in Florida with a 50 foot birdie putt on 17 and a fortunate par on 18. Hughes played the infamous “Bear Trap” 1 under for the week and shot a pair of 66’s on the weekend (lowest 36-hole total for the entire field by 3 shots) after making the cut on the number. In looking…

Playing for Money: Aaron Wilson- Working on an On-Plane Takeaway and Less Flippy Impact

By Wayne | Videos: Playing For Money

Aaron is a professional playing the Minor League mini tour here in Florida, and two of my older students took a liking to him and set him up with a couple of lessons with me. He has had some good results in the past, but he reports that he is quite erratic in scoring mostly due to his ball striking, especially with the driver. He is thin but quite strong and has a fast swing, and he wanted an opinion on his general technique to see if he could become a more consistent ball striker with trajectory control of his…

Swing Analysis: Wayne D Checks in on His Own Swing

By Wayne | The Senior Swing

Since I adopted the more radically open stance with the right foot internally rotated (pointed in the same direction as the flared left foot) I haven’t played in a tournament, but I have played a few times with some good results. The good news is that I am still playing, and my swing can still produce some decent speed, although the distances I’ve been counting on for many years are about a club shorter, which given my physical situation is not that bad. Here I show my swing with a hybrid, and the technique I went over in detail with…

Playing for Money: Derek Gillespie- Working on Old Habits

By Wayne | Videos: Playing For Money

Derek is a good example of what professional golfers go through when they try to play for a living: it’s incredibly hard, and when you’re a good player but can’t quite break through Q-School and get status it gets frustrating to the point where you consider not doing it anymore. Derek was just about there when he entered and won a tournament in Puerto Rico that qualified him for the PGA Tour event opposite the WGC. He didn’t strike it well there and missed the cut, and on his way back north decided to stop by for a look. I…

Lesson of the Week: Steve Kandell – Getting Ready for Spring

By Wayne | The Senior Swing , Videos: Lesson of the Week

Steve, a 77 year -old former 6 – handicap now playing to more like a 20, came to Florida to get out of the cold of New Jersey and to get some help with his game. I’ll let him summarize the lessons (an hour a day over 4 days): “Thank you, Wayne, for the video- great commentary. I really enjoyed working with you and this video is a great reminder for me- hands up, right hand under, get left knee working towards right knee, club not outside hands on takeaway and don’t come so much from inside on downswing. It all…

Last Week on the PGA Tour: Jon Rahm- Tour’s Fastest Swing

By Wayne | Videos: This Week On Tour

There are several notable things about Jon Rahm’s swing, but the one that gets my attention is how incredibly fast it is. If you are familiar with John Novosel’s “Tour Tempo” you know that the average Tour swing takes just over 1 second from the time the clubhead first moves back in the takeaway to the exact moment of impact. Measuring swings with a video camera capturing at 30 frames per second and counting the number of clicks of the remote, Novosel found that the majority of Tour caliber players utilized a ratio of 3:1, and also that within the…

This Week on the Tour: Eric Van Rooyen: 3rd at the WGC- Great Golf Swing

By Wayne | Videos: This Week On Tour

I just did an analysis of this fellow’s swing not too long ago (click here if you haven’t seen it), but I like it so much I had to do it again after watching the final round of the WGC in Mexico. He just looks so solid in every aspect of the game I can’t see him not becoming a perennial top 10 player, but then again, it’s golf, and who the hell really knows? In the video I point out some interesting things in Van Rooyen’s swing, most notably his use of a toe-up takeaway and a generally more…
