Ben has been playing some excellent golf lately, but he is on board with continually trying to improve his swing for the long term even with Web.Com Q-School 2nd stage coming up in a few weeks. One reason he is OK with working on new stuff is that he has been able to incorporate what we do and play well almost immediately. We haven’t had any issues where a lesson or a different thought caused problems with his game. Another reason is that I am very consistent with the type of swing action I want Ben to use and when we look at his swing on video he can see what he’s up to and where he can improve even before I comment on it.
When we started about a year ago we had some significant backswing work to do. Ben was across the line at the top and we worked toward uncrossing that so that his hands would not have such a tendency to drop behind him in transition. He has accomplished that quite nicely, but his hands still want to fall straight down instead of moving out toward the ball. That is always one of our goals, as is getting his release to move more left instead of swinging out to the right. In this lesson we work on getting his balance more out over the front of his feet and then trying to stay deep and keep his head out over the ball during the swing. We also focus on his early straightening of the left knee, which tends to cause his hips to stall and his right arm to straighten more out to the right than we would like. I think you will see that Ben hits a few drill shots and punch shots that look way different, and way better. He will be trying to incorporate that into his full swing, but won’t force it to happen. Over time and with practice and reps it should start to fall into place.
