Lesson of the Week: Elliot Smith

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Elliott is a 90’s shooter (although it looks better than that) who has come to Woodmont for his first lesson with me, and as we have seen before first lessons are always interesting as I have to assess the student in a short period of time by asking a few pertinent questions and then videoing the swing. I usually take a bit of time watching a swing for the first time as I have to formulate a game plan going forward without overwhelming the student with too much too soon, always a juggling match (what is too much or too little?).

In watching the swing I see two main areas of concern, the address posture and the flippiness through impact. I figure that if we can get the first worked out we can move on to the second and learn to hit some punch shots that incorporate a better address position and help focus on striking down and left on the ball instead of scooping it and swinging out at the target. You will see that Elliott does a marvelous job realigning his posture and balance, which has a huge positive effect on his hip and head movement throughout the swing. We then move to hitting the punch shots, and you will see the common errors in the first attempts (the higher than prescribed finish due to the excessive release of the hands and wrists) and a much better one after a few tries. All in all, it was a very successful lesson. I expect Elliott to work on this for a few weeks, take the changes to his full swing, and come back to see how things are progressing.
