Lesson of the Week: Steve Kandell – Getting Ready for Spring

By Wayne | The Senior Swing

Steve, a 77 year -old former 6 – handicap now playing to more like a 20, came to Florida to get out of the cold of New Jersey and to get some help with his game. I’ll let him summarize the lessons (an hour a day over 4 days):

“Thank you, Wayne, for the video- great commentary. I really enjoyed working with you and this video is a great reminder for me- hands up, right hand under, get left knee working towards right knee, club not outside hands on takeaway and don’t come so much from inside on downswing. It all makes great sense.  Now I just have to drill it into my brain and body!
I plan to practice a lot without ball, until our weather breaks. All in all, very helpful.”

For all of you who struggle to change your swing Steve is a perfect example of how old habits are hard to break. When a ball was there to be hit his clubface shut on the backswing every time, no matter what he thought about. No ball, no problem. His practice swings were so much different from his actual swing that he was constantly shocked. At the end I decided that the thing that would change his swing the most and make it longer was the amount of hip rotation in the backswing. Steve starts his downswing so early with his hips reversing direction even before he gets to P3 that his hips don’t have a chance to turn and his upper body can’t coil much at all.
