Lesson of the Week: John Martin – Figuring Out how to Tackle a Complicated Swing

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

John is a decent player who could be much better. He has advanced about as far as he can with the swing he showed up with, and as you will see there are many issues to deal with, too many to tackle all at once. John is serious about his game as evidenced by the fact that he comes up to Baltimore from D.C. (worst traffic in the universe) to seek help, and while I never want to overload a student, I do like to go over the swing as a whole and try to explain how the overall pattern produces erratic results, after which I pick a few things to start working on that I feel are the most important to take care of first. In this case John’s trigger is an obvious slide to the right before the club ever moves, which combined with his head dropping into his chest and a ton of left arm pronation gets his backswing into an awkward position at the top with his right arm behind him and the club well laid off. From there his move is over the top with his right leg thrusting toward the ball, and his only ball flight options are pulls and cuts. You will see a nice posture improvement (we also fixed his grip a bit, strengthening his right hand, which I forgot to mention in the video) and a much quieter trigger. By the 2nd lesson we worked on hip depth and downswing path utilizing stop and go swings and punch shots, and things started shaping up nicely.
