From The Vault: Swing Compilation: Hogan, Nelson and Snead- the Second Great American Triumvirate

By Wayne | Videos: From The Vault

Here are three of my favorite swings. The 2nd great American triumvirate, these guys dominated the Tour for the most part from 1934 to 1954. Nelson was the first to break out with 3 majors in the 30’s, while Hogan didn’t win a tournament at all until 1939 and won his first major in 1946. Snead spread his majors out over a 17-year period starting in 1937, while Nelson won his 5 majors in the 8 years from 1937 to 1945 and Hogan between 1946 and 1953. Nelson retired from most tournament play in 1946, and his 1945 season with 19 victories and 11 in a row stands out as one of the greatest in history. Hogan won 37 tournaments between 1945 and 1948, also qualifying as one of the greatest stretches of golf ever. Snead wound up with 82 total PGA Tour wins, a record that still stands. Hogan and Snead both contended in majors late in their playing careers, Hogan coming close to winning the U.S. Open in 1960 and Snead finishing 3rd in the PGA Championship in 1974 at the age of 62. I could sit down and watch these swings for hours and not get bored.
