Swing Compilation: Hagen, Jones and Sarazen- the First Great American Triumvirate

By Wayne | Videos: From The Vault

I know that all the members of the website enjoy watching the swings of the great players from the past as well as the present, so I decided to put together videos of the swings of the best players of different eras starting with Walter Hagen, who won his first major championship in 1914 and his last in 1929. Included here with Hagen are Bobby Jones and Gene Sarazen, who together were known as the first great American triumvirate. Jones won all his majors (7 professional and 6 amateur, which in these years were considered majors) between 1923 and 1930. Sarazen won 7 majors between 1922 and 1935, when his victory at the Masters made him the first man to win all 4 professional majors. If we look at the period of 1920 to 1930 it would be hard not to consider Hagen the best of the bunch, as he won 9 of his majors, all professional, while Jones had 7. Sarazen won 4 of his majors between 1932 and 35, while Jones retired after his remarkable 1930 season and Hagen did not win another major after 1929. I do make a few comments about the swings, noting that all three demonstrate a good deal of lower body movement in the backswing, a cupped left wrist at the top of the swing, and a definite “hands out” move in transition. The lifted left heel is on full display here, and it is quite educational to watch how they move their hips in order to get the heel back down without any detrimental effects.
