It’s always an honor to be chosen to view and analyze the swing of a promising young player, and Neil Zhu certainly fits that bill. Neil is (I think) 10 years old in this video and already possessing the attributes of an excellent player. Neil’s father, Jason, was watching some of my swing analysis videos and thought that it would be a nice thing to get my opinion regarding Neil’s swing. My suggestions here would be the same if Neil had been 15 or 25 years old. The way his father implements them is another matter, and I recommend that he slip them in without sounding too critical of what Neil is already doing.
It is my experience that kids soak up knowledge like sponges, and respond to almost any learning experience you give them, including hands on instruction, mirror work, video work, and simply teaching them what their favorite players do. They love side by side comparisons, and see things clearly almost immediately. Their talent level shows when it becomes apparent that some develop better technique early on without much guidance then change faster than others when presented with alternatives to faulty technique. I would guess that once Neil puts in the grip and setup changes that the pivot and arm movement issues would improve right away. The dicey part will probably be the adjusting of the in to out pattern to a more around and left pattern, but there is plenty of time for all of this stuff. I would start with the pre shot stuff, then move to the “left shoulder under” idea and see what happens. Certainly the rhythm and ability to create lag and thus clubhead speed through the ball are highly advanced and bode well for his continued success.
