The longer I teach the more it occurs to me that for the non-tour player one of the biggest swing problems I see is the overuse of the right arm and shoulder in the attempt to produce “more turn” and a longer swing. When the right upper arm and shoulder are used to pull the left arm into the backswing further than it can naturally go the normal player will inevitably goof up the transition to the ultimate detriment of the impact area. In this basement video I go over how I see the left arm controlling the ultimate length of backswing while the right arm stays in a “ready” position to respond to the body pulling the left arm into the downswing, and I demonstrate a drill that will help give the player the proper feel for the movement. In part 1 I forgot to mention the importance of the lower body, which is why there is a part 2 where I go over the importance of bracing and deepening the right leg in the backswing.
