Lesson of the Week: Steve Strobeck

Steve is a long time student and an avid student of the game who is keenly interested in applying a more solid strike to his iron shots. His tendency is to “pick” the ball off the ground without taking a divot, a result of a lack of pivot rotation which keeps his right side from moving forward into the impact area and beyond. His difficulty stems in large part from a fairly unique (I have never seen anyone else with this particular malady) physical limitation, that of a fused right ankle. If you didn’t think that driving off the inside of your right foot was that important try compressing a golf ball while keeping your right ankle locked. Simply put, if the right foot and ankle do not bend inward in the forward swing there is a serious limitation placed on the amount of diagonal pivot movement that can be achieved in the swing. Without this combination of lateral movement and rotation the left side cannot clear enough to allow the right side to “cover”, or “trap” the ball. Steve has always tended to drop his right shoulder as he approaches impact, which is why I usually have him hitting split hand punch shots as a regular practice drill. In this video you will see how we try to compensate for this lack of mobility in his foot by emphasizing a full release and de-emphasizing a balanced finish. I would much rather have Steve achieve a better strike than to “pose” his finish.
