Matt Wallace and Matthew Fitzpatrick: Demonstrating Extremes in Tempo from Slowest to Fastest

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

You’ve got to love a game where two players in the hunt to win a big event are so amazingly different when it comes to what golf people would call a “fundamental”, that being tempo. The other interesting thing here is that both golfers could be much closer in utilizing the same rhythm, which makes it crucial that we understand the difference between the two terms, which most of the time are used (incorrectly) interchangeably. When we speak of tempo, we are measuring the rate, or speed of the movement. Fitzpatrick’s tempo is fast, Wallace’s tempo is slow. In fact,…

Online Lesson: Thomas Petric- Improving Sequence by Controlling the Right Arm and Shoulder at the End of the Backswing

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Thomas has a nice move that could be improved rapidly by keeping the right arm and shoulder from overturning at the top of the swing. As you will see in the video Thomas does a nice job until the club reaches about ¾ of the way back, at which point he continues to crank the right shoulder and arm back until the club crosses the line and both arms are lifted. The pullback of the right shoulder creates a sequence problem when it pushes the upper body forward into the forward swing before the pelvis has a chance to lead…

Wayne D. Swing Analysis: Identifying Physical Issues

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

I’ve been playing better for a number of reasons, none of which are surprising: I’m able to practice without killing myself (I can hit balls for 90 minutes or so), I hit a million pitch shots at Boca Rio this winter which has made helped my up -and -down game, I got a TaylorMade Spider X putter (like DJ and McIlroy are using) that’s money, and I’m figuring out how to fight my lack of trunk mobility in my longer swings. My shorter irons, which don’t put as much stress on my pivot, have become quite accurate, while my misses…

Jon Rahm: How Great Lower Body Action Makes Possible Variations in Arm and Wrist Movement

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Most viewers of Jon Rahm are mesmerized by what he does with his upper body, notably his short, oddly shaped swing that seems to have no depth in the backswing, an extremely bowed left wrist, and an exaggeratedly laid off shaft at the top. But in this video, I show that what allows all that to work is Rahm’s lower body technique, which is just about flawless. Rahm is a thick guy and taking the left arm across the chest would probably feel too tight, so it’s not surprising that he lets the hands travel away from his body in…

Playing for Money: Matt Shubley- Looking for Reasons for the Ball Not Falling Right After Starting Left

By Wayne | Videos: Playing For Money

Hey Wayne, Hope all is well, after a little bit of time off between tournaments I’m starting to gear up to get back into competition. Swing feels just a little off, I’ve started to have my stock ball fight move left to right rather than right to left and found it significantly better However, right now I can’t seem to get it to fall right. The ball starts a little left and either keeps falling left or stays there. If you can take a look at these videos when you get a chance and let me know if you see…

Wayne D. 2019 U.S. Senior Open Qualifier: Almost

By Wayne | blog

It was 80 players for 3 spots, and I finished tied for 4th. I shot 68, but there were two 66’s and a 67. The 67 was in my group (by Mark Brown, the head professional at the club on Long Island where I started my teaching career) as was another 68, by Bob Lennon, director of instruction at Wilmington CC in Delaware. When I finished my group’s scores were the lowest, and since we were an early time and I live close to the course, I got out of the rain and headed home to watch the scores online…

Playing for Money: Zach Lese- Staying Out Over the Ball

By Wayne | Videos: Playing For Money

Zach has been working with me for a few years and I think you’ll agree that he has an enviable swing that should be producing results soon. His specific question about these swings is whether his right leg is getting too deep, and I show him side by side with Hogan to dissuade him from that worry. Hogan actually got even more depth in his right lower side in the backswing, but importantly did it while keeping his head from backing up at all, even appearing to lean forward into backswing while the pelvis rotates and pushes back. Zach tends…

Online Lesson: Jamie Kilmer, PGA – Part 6

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

need help. I see my drifting…a little sloppy on take away and head moving. That’s where I will start today. trying to get lower to slide towards target with my back to target longer. thoughts? hitting it high and short at times. Jamie and I have been working together for a little over a year now and like many PGA professionals he gets busy in season and has limited time to practice and keep an eye on his swing. Jamie’s issues usually involve his right upper arm getting stuck at the top while his pelvis rotates quickly in transition, which…
