My Week at the PNC

By Wayne | blog

By now you know I shot 81-71 at the Professional National Championship at Turning Stone in Verona, NY. My number one goal for the week was to get through the practice rounds and pro-am and then be able to complete 36 holes walking, which I hadn’t done in 3 years. My expectations as to my play were fairly low, but the idea is to play hard and shoot as low as you can, so of course I harbored some hope of making the cut. I haven’t really played well on a difficult course in 7 or 8 years, and since I have less than 10 tournament rounds under my belt since I withdrew from the PNC two years ago my chances of making a cut that is fairly difficult due to the 310 players playing for 90 spots after 36 holes were probably not so great.

Swing Analysis: Lydia Ko, LPGA

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

Lydia was the top rated women’s amateur for 2 ½ years, from the age of 14 to 16. She turned pro and after playing in only 23 events she was ranked 5th in the world. She moved to number 1 when she was only 17, and has been there ever since, finishing 1st, 1st, and 2nd in the last 3 women’s majors. Here we look at the massive swing changes she has undergone in the past year

Swing Analysis: Wayne D. Getting Ready for the PNC

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

It’s a Monday morning and before my weekly therapy session that usually leaves me unable to practice full swings I went out to the local public course to hit a few and took my camera with me. I am somewhat pleased with my progress of late as the set up change I made a few weeks ago is starting to pay some dividends. I don’t know if I will get this by the weekend, but I am on the right track and I expect to be playing some respectable golf in the near future.

Online Students: Tom Smith

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

I really enjoy the website and have really learned a lot from your videos. I am 58 and have recently retired so would like to spend more time refining my swing and lowering my handicap. I have a number of issues early in my swing that have proved challenging to correct. Club under the shaft plane, not using my trunk to initiate the swing which progresses to a down swing where the club comes in high and gets stuck.

Online Students: Chuck Zellner Part 3

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

As you will see in the video Chuck has made some nice improvement in his lower body action, but since last lesson he has started dropping his hands and arms behind him in transition, which we all know makes getting the shaft forward at impact quite difficult. I encourage Chuck to keep trying to center himself over the ball instead of leaning to the right, and also to load less to the right in the backswing.

Improvement: Peter Procops, PGA Part 7

By Wayne | Improvement

So far in our series of lessons this is the best face-on video I’ve seen from Peter. There’s space under the right arm in the take away, he’s staying down in transition, there’s a good amount of lateral drive and the approach width is good for the driver, very nice improvement from the face-on view. The down-the-line view is where we start so see some issues.

Pro Tip of the Week: Lessons are for Learning New Things

By Wayne | Articles: Becoming a Better Player

One of the problems I have observed over my 30 years of teaching is that a lot of students tend to view a lesson as a “fix” to a particular problem they are experiencing. I have heard the phrase “help me, just don’t change me” enough times to realize that the person who believes this is possible has probably played the game at the same level for many years, the point being that if you want to improve you are going to have to learn some new concepts about the swing or the short game, and you are going to have to try to change what you are doing presently to something better.
