After earning exempt status on the Web.Com Tour for 2014 Lenny finished out 2013 with a near miss at the Mayacoba Classic in Mexico, qualifying just to play in the event in a 4-spotter and then making the cut with nice rounds of 69 and 68. He was poised to break into the top 10 with 7 holes to play, but a triple bogey on 12 and two more bogies coming in derailed his chances. In assessing the year Lenny would have liked to have played better, but he had a few top finishes and showed signs of generally better ball striking, although the tendency was to miss left under the greatest pressure. I asked him about out work together and he was very positive, going as far as to say that he wishes in hindsight that he had taken the time to stop in for a look at least a few more times rather than to always opt for arriving at the tournament on Monday and playing practice rounds. This year I think we will make an effort to see each other at least once a month or so in order to stay on track.
In this video we are at the TPC Eagle Trace in Fort Lauderdale on the back of the range, where we hit and filmed for about 6 hours (with lunch in between). My concern, and one that Lenny is now really buying into, is that his tendency to drop his hands straight down from the top and release out to the right complicates the closing of the face and is a major culprit in his inability to consistently get his irons close to the hole. I would like Len to deepen and tighten the backswing with the hands slightly lower at the top in order to encourage the “out” move and thus a better clearing of the left side in the downswing. Lenny had the idea of consciously moving his left shoulder away from his chin and around as a transition thought, and I added the idea of keeping the right arm closer to the body longer through the impact area as it always tends to straighten early and release more down the line or to the right rather than to the left. I would like to see him continue to sharpen up his left arm to shaft angle and get rid of that “crunched up” look of his arms halfway into the downswing. We made some good progress here and will get together again soon.
