I was lucky enough to stumble upon this interview while randomly clicking channels one day, and the words that Watson used and the message he delivered were so close to the way that I have tried to approach golf and have tried to impress upon my students that I thought that you, the serious golfers who are on this website to improve your play, would enjoy and benefit from them. Golf is an individual sport. There is a certain loneliness that plays a role in any individual sport, but none so much as golf, where you don’t have to hit a shot until you are ready, and you are the only one who controls where the ball goes. I was appalled when Phil Mickelson called Tom out in front of his teammates and the national media because I knew in my heart that Watson delivered the message to his team that they simply had to man up and play better, and that the guys who were not playing well would not play. I’ll take Watson over Mickelson any day, and I’ve lost much of the respect I had for Phil, who, while a great player, did himself a great disservice that day in the pressroom. I also love the fact that Tom has Tiger’s back, and I think you will really like his comments about how every player engages in searching for “keys” that help them play better every day, and that the media has blown Tiger’s coaching changes way out of proportion.
